Livestock wastewater treatment with microbial products – Sustainable circulation trend

The current situation in livestock wastewater treatment

The livestock industry, especially pigs, cows, chickens... are generating huge volumes of wastewater every day. Livestock wastewater contains high levels of organic matter, ammonium, nitrogen and harmful microorganisms, accompanied by a strong odor. If not treated properly, this wastewater will seep into the soil, contaminate groundwater and directly affect public health.

Industrial Livestock Wastewater Treatment

Causes of pollution from livestock wastewater

One of the main reasons why livestock wastewater becomes an environmental threat is that the amount of organic matter, manure and urine discharged from livestock is too large, which is not thoroughly treated before being discharged into the environment. Especially in pig farms, wastewater with high levels of BOD, COD, ammonium nitrogen and toxic gases such as H₂S, NH₃, is prone to bad odors and pollutes surface water and groundwater.

In addition, the collection and treatment system of livestock wastewater at many facilities is still sketchy, without filtration or lack of probiotics to support decomposition, leading to backlogs, the emergence of pathogenic bacteria and seriously affecting public health.

Current methods of treating livestock wastewater:

There are 3 popular methods today: Mechanics (Physics), Biology, Chemistry - Physics.

Mechanical method: To separate these substances from wastewater, we use a mechanical method of filtering through garbage barriers

How to do it: Use a retaining net, primary sedimentation tank, garbage separation trough to remove suspended solids, feces, hair, and excess food.

In small farms (less than 1000 pigs), the following conditions will be common:

There is only a settling tank or a simple open chute.

There is no mechanism for periodic solid waste collection, leading to  system congestion and odors due to slow decomposition of garbage.

Unable to treat most of the dissolved organic substances and toxic gases such as NH₃, H₂S.

The biggest disadvantage of this method is: Only the raw carcass can be solved, completely unable to treat dissolved pollutants, which are the main cause of foul odor and environmental pollution.

Sedimentation tanks are applied in mechanical methods

  • Biological method: this method has 2 types, anaerobic method and aerobic method.

  • Anaerobic method: using a group of anaerobic microorganisms, operating in the absence of oxygen.

  • Aerobic method: uses a group of aerobic microorganisms, which operate under conditions that require a continuous supply of oxygen.

This method is popular in medium and large farms (over 1000 heads): Applying works such as UASB anaerobic tanks, biological tank clusters, aerotank tanks with the goal of decomposing organic matter, reducing BOD, COD, and Ammonium.

Currently, farms in Dong Nai, Long An are facing the following problems:

The system often does not have enough area to design a standard biological tank (volume, water retention time, etc.).

Due to the lack of specialized microorganisms, after 2-3 months of operation, the natural microflora in the tank gradually weakens, leading to  odor overflow, wastewater not meeting output standards.

Temperature changes (sunny season – rainy season), unstable pH, fluctuating inlet flow cause the processing to be interrupted.

The biggest disadvantage of this method: It requires a very high degree of stability in the microbiological environment. If microorganisms are not added periodically, the biological system will "die", causing a bad smell and having to start over.

Aerobic tanks are applied in biological methods

  • Chemical and physical methods: Depending on the nature and characteristics of each waste source, the treatment units will apply appropriate treatment methods. Here are some common physicochemical methods in wastewater treatment:

+ Foaming flocculant method

+ Ion exchange method

+ Extraction method

+ Flotation method

+ Adsorption method

This method is often applied at well-invested establishments or livestock areas close to residential areas to reduce odors and meet wastewater standards.

Real-life examples:

A farm in Binh Duong spends over millions of VND/month to buy PAC, Polymer and chlorine disinfection for wastewater – a large number for a medium-scale livestock model.

In addition, technicians must be trained to dose the flocculant accurately. If chemicals are abused, they will cause toxic residues, affecting the health of livestock and crops (if water is reused).

The biggest limitation of this method is: High operating costs, easy to be toxic if operated incorrectly. In addition, the treatment of odors is only instantaneous, not sustainable.

Flocculation tanks, foaming tanks applied in physicochemical methods

Today, traditional methods are no longer suitable without supporting biological factors, and many farm owners must look for alternatives or supplements to increase efficiency and reduce costs. Microbiotic solutions  are becoming the first choice because of their ability to:

  • Maintain a stable microbiome and save space.

  • Rapid deodorization, natural reduction of BOD/COD .

  • Reuse of treated water, contributing to the creation of a circulation cycle.

Microbiology application of BioFix Fresh for livestock wastewater treatment

Unlike traditional methods that require large investments or expensive operations, microbial preparations work on a natural principle: using billions of beneficial bacteria to "eat" pollutants. The decomposition process takes place quickly, does not create toxic residual sludge, and reduces odors and improves the quality of the output water.

BioFix Fresh's product lines  – such as BAC OC-1101 for odor treatment, BAC AD-1005 and BAC AM-1006 for anaerobic tanks and BAC IND – 1004 aerobic – have been successfully applied in many farms. As a result, the treated wastewater not only meets QCVN standards but can also be reused for watering trees, raising worms or making organic fertilizer – in the spirit of modern circular agriculture.
