What is SVI? The role of SVI in wastewater treatment
What is SVI?
SVI (short for Sludge Volume Index) is a sludge volume index commonly used to measure the characteristics of a mixture of sludge and water or activated sludge (unit is milliliters/gram). After calculating the SVI index, based on the SVI index, we can diagnose the "disease" of the aerobic tank sludge system.
How to calculate the SVI index:
In which:
MLSS: activated sludge concentration in solution, normally activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants often fluctuates from 50 to 150.
Application of SVI index:
After obtaining the SVI index, based on the SVI value, we can "diagnose the disease" of aerobic tank sludge:
SVI < 50 mL/g: potential pinfloc (potential for bran sludge floc).
50 < SVI < 100 mL/g: best.
100 < SVI < 150 mL/g: Filament growth (growth of filamentous bacteria).
150 < SVI < 200 mL/g: Bulking at high flows.
200 < SVI < 300 mL/g: Bulking (sludge that is difficult to settle).
SVI > 300 mL/g: Severe bulking.
Thus: SVI is best between 100 and 200 ml/g.
Note: The smaller the SVI, the faster and denser the sludge settles.
After knowing the “disease” of the sludge, each individual case will have a suitable treatment.
